Ingredients
- 1 large cabbage, cut into wedges
- 2 cups baby potatoes, halved
- 1 lb shrimp (optional)
- 4 cloves garlic, smashed
- 1 large onion, diced
- 4 tbsp butter
- 1 lb smoked sausage, sliced
- 2 tbsp Cajun seasoning
- 1 tbsp Old Bay seasoning
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes
Directions
- First in a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. While adding onions and garlic, and sauté until translucent.
- Then stir in your sausage and shrimp with onions this helps with flavor, cook until browned for about 5-7 minutes.
- Add potatoes, chicken broth, Cajun seasoning, Old Bay, and red pepper flakes. At this point taste and add as you go while bring to a boil.
- Add cabbage wedges to the pot and reduce heat to a simmer. Cover and cook for 30 minutes or until tender.
- Finally, if using shrimp, wait unit the last 5 minutes of cooking. Stir gently to combine.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.
Adjustments and Tips
For spice lovers, feel free to increase the red pepper flakes. Prefer a milder dish? Reduce or omit the flakes and Cajun seasoning. You can swap smoked sausage for turkey, shrimp or chicken sausage for a lighter choice, or simply omit the meat for a delicious vegan version. Replace sausage with mushrooms for that heartiness!
